The Kelowna Jaycees are very excited to announce that the following NHL greats will be attending the 2009 Gentlemen’s Dinner:
With over 500 career goals, 1200 career points, and tied for 39th all time in NHL scoring - Jeremy Roenick.
Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, 5th All-Time NHL leading scorer and NHL Legend of Hockey, Marcel Dionne.
Stand-out goaltender and local businessman - Byron Dafoe.
From the 2 time Stanley Cup Champion (73/74 and 74/75) Philadelphia Flyers aka the Broad Street Bullies: Bernie Parent, Dave "The Hammer" Schultz, Joe Watson, and Bob Kelly.
Jeremy Roenick was first noticed when he led Thayer Academy to a high school championship, scoring 84 points in 24 games. He then finished the season by skating for Team USA at the World Junior Championships of 1988.
In the QMJHL, he shone just as brightly, netting 70 points in 28 games. He then returned to the World Junior Championships where he led all scorers and was voted a First-Team All-Star. He jumped straight from the World Juniors to the NHL where he has remained ever since.
With the Blackhawks, he scored over 100 points for three-straight seasons between 1991 and 1994, and during the 2007-08 season (with San Jose), Roenick recorded his 500th NHL career goal and a few games later became the second highest American-born goal scorer.
Marcel Dionne was one of the most productive offensive performers in NHL history. His consistency at such a high level earned him respect and accolades throughout the league.
Over nearly a dozen full seasons with the Kings, where he spent the majority of his career, Marcel topped the 100-point mark seven times, was a two-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award and was selected to the NHL First and Second All-Star Teams twice each. In 1979-80, he was declared the winner of the Art Ross Trophy after he tied young superstar Wayne Gretzky with 137 points but edged him in goals scored.
He retired in 1988-89 with 731 goals and 1,771 points. At the time of his retirement, those totals placed him third on the NHL all-time scoring list behind only Gretzky and Howe.
The popular and gregarious Dionne was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
Byron Dafoe started his NHL career sharing the goaltending duties in L.A. with Kelly Hrudey. During his time with the Kings, other NHL teams had the opportunity to see that he was in fact a legitimate starting NHL goaltender.
Later with the Bruins, he played 65 games and posted 30 wins, six shutouts and a 2.24 GAA. He became a fan favourite in Beantown and was considered an instrumental force in leading Boston to a 30-point improvement in the standings.
The 1998-99 season was even better for Dafoe, who notched an impressive 1.99 GAA while leading the league with ten shutouts with a 32-23-11 record. That performance earned him Second Team All-Star laurels.
Bernie Parent sparkled in leading the league with a 1.89 GAA and 12 shutouts during the 73/74 abnd 74/75 seasons. He shared the Vezina Trophy with Chicago’s Tony Esposito and was named a first team all-star in leading the Flyers to a first place finish in the West Division. He finished the year in fine style, taking the Conn Smythe Trophy while leading the Flyers to the first of two Stanley Cup Championships.
The following year was much of the same, adding another Vezina Trophy to a second Conn Smythe Trophy and Stanley Cup.
A lost statistic is the fact that Parent played on a team that lead the NHL in penalty minutes - which meant killing penalties. “Only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parent” became a catch-phrase and bumper sticker in the city of brotherly love in those years.
Dave "The Hammer" Schultz was part of the tough "Broad Street Bullies" Flyer teams which believed in policing themselves on the ice and were never shy to drop the gloves.
Dave was known as "The Hammer" for good reason. Between 1972 and 1975 he lead the NHL in penalty minutes with 259, 348 and a whopping 472 in the respective years. The tough play was one of the reasons for the Flyers winning back to back Stanley Cup championships in 1974 and 1975.
After about nine seasons in the NHL, Dave "The Hammer" Schultz retired from hockey in 1980 with 2294 regular season and 412 playoff career penalty minutes.

Joe Watson was a reliable rearguard who employed a steady positional style of play, highlighted by a daring streak as a fearless shot blocker.
He also exhibited a contagiously positive team attitude that won him the favour of his fans.
In 1974 and 1975, his foundational contribution to his team came to complete fruition with Stanley Cup victories at the conclusion of both seasons.
Bob Kelly was an aggressive left-winger who would become a member of the famous "Broad Street Bullies" and helped guide the Flyers to their two consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 1974 and 1975. Along with teammate Dave Schultz, Kelly was one of the team's top enforcers.
Kelly scored the 1975 cup winning goal at 11 seconds into the 3rd period of game 6. On tremendous individual effort he stole the puck behind the Sabres' net, and was able to slide the puck under goalie Roger Crozier.
Kelly played with the Flyers until the 1979/80 NHL season when he was traded to the Washington Capitals. He would play with the Capitals until the middle of the 1981/82 season.
He is now the Flyers' ambassador of hockey.
